BUILDING INDONESIA: UPHOLDING THE SPIRIT OF YOUTH PLEDGE WITH BINUS INTERNATIONAL Serpong
In commemoration of the 85th Youth Pledge Day, as many as 42 students of years 11 and 12 at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS Simprug and Serpong, who are members of the Habitat Club, engaged in a ‘building Indonesia’ activity by helping to build housing units and supporting facilities for disadvantaged communities in Mauk Village, Tangerang.
This ‘Building Indonesia’ activity is one of the community services taught to students who collaborate with Habitat for Humanity. Aside from conducting fundraising events, the students directly blend with the communities while learning and working with their own hands.
“This year is the second year BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS have collaborated with Habitat for Humanity. In addition to the 28uild.id (to build Indonesia) that we have twice participated in, we have also held an event called Selimut untuk Ibu Pertiwi (Blankets for the Motherland). It’s an activity to sew patchworks to be bed covers and blankets, which were then sold, with the profits donated to the Habitat’s humanitarian activities,” said Mr. Bonifatius Djoko Pandojo, the Creativity, Action and Service Coordinator of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug.
“Poverty is a global issue surrounding us. As Indonesian youngsters, we should be concerned and obligated to help alleviate the burden of the lives of the poor, as one way to reduce poverty,” said Somya Astari Wirawidia, a 12-year-old student who is also the coordinator of the Habitat Club at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug.
