BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong was back to hold Indonesian Culture Week (ICW), held from April 28 to 30. This fourth ICW carried the theme “Indonesian Culture My Pride”, conveying the message that Indonesian culture is something that Indonesian people should be proud of, from one generation to another.

One of the activities held during ICW was the storytelling interschool competition, which was participated by nine schools involving elementary students of Grade 1 and Grade 2. Each school was entitled to send a maximum of three representatives to take part at this contest. Each participant was assigned with a folk story, which was retold before the audience, using visual aids and/or body movements. To get a  fair assessment, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong picked judges from the Department of Education Authority and the Chairwoman of Kampoeng Dongeng. The first winner of this storytelling contest was achieved by Alexandra Nicola from BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong, the second place was garnered by Annete Faith from Dian Harapan, and the third place by Jemima Kenyo from BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong.

In addition to the storytelling contest, other activities included traditional games, which were participated by the students of the Early Childhood Years. Among the fun games were “cublak-cublaksuweng” and “ularnaga” (dragon) . The event also featured reading poetry contest, designed for elementary students of Grade 3 and Grade 4; news reading contest by Grade 5 students, and no less exciting was the students’ costume parade where the participants donned lovely indigenous costumes from the various provinces of Indonesia.  The Parent Support Group also manifested their support by holding an exhibit on the different kinds of batik, delicious traditional food and original ornaments around Indonesia.

It is hoped that through the celebration of the Indonesian Culture Week 2014, the students of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong developed a deeper love and pride for the richness, uniqueness and beauty of the Indonesian culture.  (AL)
