Every Student Learns Differently

At BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, we believe every student should have the opportunity to grow, succeed, and reach their potential.

Our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) provides a structured and proactive approach to identifying student needs and providing the right level of academic support, intervention, or enrichment at the right time.

MTSS is not a label and it is not a separate programme. It is a school-wide approach to supporting learning, built around strong classroom teaching, early identification of needs, targeted intervention, ongoing progress monitoring, and collaboration between students, teachers, school leaders, support staff, and families.

How MTSS Works

MTSS is organised across three levels of support. Students may move between levels depending on their progress and individual needs.

Tier 1 - High Quality Learning for All

Tier 1 represents the strong teaching and learning that every student receives in the classroom.

Teachers use assessment information, classroom observations, student work, and other evidence to understand where students are in their learning and adjust instruction accordingly.

This may include:

Differentiated teaching and learning strategies
Appropriate levels of challenge and enrichment
Scaffolding and additional classroom support
Regular feedback and formative assessment
Opportunities for student reflection and goal setting

The goal of Tier 1 is to provide a strong academic foundation for every learner while identifying students who may benefit from additional support or greater challenge.

Tier 2 - Targeted Support

Some students may need additional support beyond regular classroom instruction.

Tier 2 provides targeted, focused intervention, often individually or in small groups, to address specific learning needs.

Support may focus on areas such as:

Literacy and numeracy development
Subject-specific skills and concepts
Study skills and organisation
Executive functioning and time management
Academic confidence and learning habits

Interventions are regularly reviewed so that teachers can determine whether the support is effective and make adjustments when needed.

Tier 3 - Individualised and Intensive Support

A smaller number of students may require more intensive and individualised support.

At Tier 3, the school develops a more personalised plan based on the student's specific needs. This may involve increased intervention, closer progress monitoring, individual learning goals, and collaboration with appropriate internal or external specialists.

Families are important partners throughout this process, and where additional professional assessment or support is needed, the school may recommend consultation with qualified external specialists.

Using Data to Support Learning

MTSS allows us to make informed decisions based on evidence rather than waiting for a student to experience significant difficulty.

We use multiple sources of information, which may include:

Classroom and teacher assessments
Summative assessment results
Diagnostic assessments
MAP Growth data where applicable
Teacher observations
Student work and learning behaviours
Student reflection and goal setting

No single assessment determines the support a student receives. Instead, we look at the whole picture of the learner.

Partnership with Students and Families

Successful learning support requires collaboration.

Teachers, support staff, school leaders, students, and families work together to understand needs, establish goals, monitor progress, and determine appropriate next steps.

Parents are kept informed when additional intervention is required, and students are encouraged to understand their own strengths, challenges, and learning goals.

Support and Enrichment for Every Learner

MTSS is not only for students experiencing academic difficulty.

The same framework helps us identify students who may need greater challenge, extension, or enrichment, ensuring that all students continue to grow from their individual starting point.

Our goal is to ensure that every learner is known, appropriately challenged, supported when needed, and empowered to become increasingly independent in their learning.
