Discovering the Beauty of Rural Life: BINUS SCHOOL Serpong’s Fieldwork Adventure in Cigugur
The bustling and energetic urban lifestyle contrasts greatly with the serene and purposeful rural lifestyle. In an effort to provide its students with a fresh perspective on country living, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong organized an enriching and insightful fieldwork session for its students in Cigugur, West Java, on Sunday, May 28th, 2023.
Drea Agrata Kyria, an 11th-grade student at BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, said that city life gives life in your own bubble, but being in Cigugur popped that bubble, even for a little while.
“This opportunity gave me a chance to stop what I’m doing, to slow down and take a deep breath, taking in all that’s around me, to be grateful and joyous, to immerse myself, and find joy within others. Nowadays, it’s hard not to be individualistic. People care less and less about the activities happening simultaneously around them, focusing less on other people. I think we forget just how much other people mean to us, no matter if they are a stranger or a loved one,” said Drea.
On their first day, the first destination was the Watu Kencana Building. Here, students had the opportunity to exchange perspectives and gain insights into the local culture and traditions.
The itinerary continued with a visit to the Ciremai National Park Area in Palutungan, where students actively participated in reforestation efforts. Understanding the importance of environmental conservation, the students devoted their time to nurturing and restoring the natural ecosystem.
On the second day of the fieldwork session, students began their day early. The day’s activities commenced with a physical fitness test and health education campaign at SMPK Yos Sudarso Cigugur, emphasizing the importance of holistic well-being.
Next, farming at Saung Abah offered students hands-on experience in agricultural practices, fostering an appreciation for sustainable food production. This was followed by a creative session of painting Geulis Umbrellas at Taman Mayasih, showcasing the student’s artistic talents.
The fieldwork session continued with a fish harvest activity, providing students with insights into traditional fishing methods.
On the final day, students embarked on a historical visit to the Linggardjati Treaty Building in Linggardjati, Kuningan. This was followed by another historical visit to the Keraton Kasepuhan Building in Cirebon, allowing students to delve into the cultural heritage of the region.
Kayra Lituhayu Ayori, an 11th-grade student at BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, emphasized that her time in Cigugur provided her with significant educational growth, particularly in terms of embracing tolerance, diversity, and invaluable local wisdom.
“I acquired extensive knowledge about the remarkable ability of Cigugur’s residents to maintain peace despite their varying religious, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. I also learned the value of respect. Overall, it was a tremendously enjoyable trip, and I feel deeply grateful for the enriching experience,” she enthusiastically expressed.
This fieldwork session was part of BINUS SCHOOL Serpong’s commitment to providing a holistic education, as well as its dedication to #DiscoverNewHorizons that extend beyond the classroom. By involving students in practical experiences, encouraging cultural exchange, and fostering environmental consciousness, the institution aims to empower its students to become responsible global citizens.
