Everything around you is mathematics, and everything around you is numbers. BINUS SCHOOL Serpong can build an active learning environment where transforming numbers into mesmerizing wonders.
Airlangga Rei Avicenna was one of the twenty-two WMI participants and one of the best BINUS SCHOOL Serpong grade 4B students, successfully defining his mathematics prowess. His journey began with the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI), a prestigious international mathematics competition that always gets a lot of enthusiasm from students and which BINUS SCHOOL Serpong always takes part in each year, held in South Korea for this year. WMI is an international mathematics competition initiated by the state of Taiwan to bring together institutions and organizations worldwide to promote mathematics. WMI students not only compete at the national and international levels, but they also get to encounter other cultures and mathematicians.
It was a challenge that tested his mathematical acumen and resilience in preparing for a competition with limited resources. As he prepared for the competition, Airlangga faced a new challenge: insufficient practice materials. So, his parents made special practice questions for him. “I didn’t have stuff like that, so my mom only taught me,” said Airlangga. However, Ms Ida, his teacher, added that she had helped him prepare. She saw Airlangga’s talent in math and guided him. Airlangga loved math because of the excellent teaching at BINUS. With Ms Ida’s help, he joined the WMI competition and got support from his school and extra coaching.
Two to three weeks of intense preparation followed, filled with countless study hours. Airlangga and his mother, his source of guidance, worked tirelessly to ensure he was ready for the competition.
When Airlangga walked into the competition venue, Hope Soho, he couldn’t help but think about all the excitement and eagerness that had motivated him to prepare for this moment. The competition started, and it covered a wide range of mathematical subjects. Airlangga found himself particularly drawn to his favourite topics, “I like arithmetic, geometry, and solving problems.”
However, only some parts of the competition were easy for him. Some challenges proved to be quite tricky, like dealing with probability equations. It was like solving a puzzle, and Airlangga knew he had to stay focused and use all his skills to tackle these more challenging problems.
Eventually, Airlangga’s resilience and support from his parents and BINUS SCHOOL Serpong formed the bedrock of his success in the World Mathematics Invitational. From crafting practice materials to navigating unfamiliar terrains in Korea, Airlangga’s journey proves that everyone can DISCOVER NEW HORIZON with BINUS SCHOOL Serpong.
