Exploring Arts: Primary Visual Art Class at BINUS SCHOOL Serpong Brings Imagination to Life
Did you know that art education influences children’s learning journey? Various studies show that art activities play a crucial role in a child’s holistic development. In particular, visual arts enhance fine motor skills and encourage problem-solving and critical thinking since it cultivates creativity, imagination, and self-expression.
BINUS SCHOOL Serpong sees this as an opportunity to strengthen hands-on learning at the heart of the curriculum. Our school introduced Primary Visual Art Class for Primary students to explore, experiment, and bring their ideas to life.
Recently, these young BINUSIAN explore the world of texture and space, turning clay and found objects into mixed-media paintings. This project allowed them to explore different materials and techniques, blending creativity with tactile learning.
Exploring Texture and Space with Clay
Guided by Mr. Fadhil, our favorite Art teacher, through this art project, students focused on understanding and experimenting with various textures, such as implied texture, real texture, and abstract texture by using clay. The clay serves as a media to shape and mold students’ ideas, transforming flat surfaces into dynamic, textured painting.
“As we know, there are many types of textures, such as implied texture, real texture, abstract texture, and more. In this lesson, students produced a painting using clay to create texture,” explained Mr. Fadhil. “They explored the clay to create types of textures.”
One of our talented Primary students has crafted a stunning simple scenery of a sea, where every detail, including the palm trunk and waves, was enhanced with textures from clay.
Mixed-Media Masterpieces: Adding Found Objects
While showcasing the artwork, Mr Fadhil highlighted how the students integrated found objects such as rocks into their artwork. The artwork of sea scenery explained earlier, combining different materials, aside from the clay, with found objects like rocks as an example. To unify their pieces, they also painted vibrant backgrounds, integrating all elements into a cohesive composition.
This approach takes their creations a step further, and they explored the mixed-media technique, which added layers of complexity and depth to their paintings. The combination of materials visually spread the imaginative scene to life, showcasing the students’ ability to think beyond traditional art forms and their creative process.
This art education encouraged students to experiment with different textures and materials and allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of how textures can be used to create depth and dimension in visual art.
Hand-on Art Cultivates Creativity, Problem-Solving, and Development
On the surface, this project facilitated our young students to create visually appealing artworks. On top of that, this visual art project played a vital role in developing essential skills.
As previously mentioned, hands-on exploration in art enhances students’ problem-solving abilities. It is because the creative process enforces them to think critically about how different materials interact. Through trial and error, students discovered new ways to manipulate textures and generate visually fascinating compositions with depth.
Working with clay and found objects as art materials and media also favors their sensory development and fine motor skills improvements. Furthermore, their experiment in creating their artworks trained their spatial reasoning and understanding of space. These experiences go beyond the classroom, equipping them with valuable skills applicable to various aspects of future learning and everyday life.
At the heart of our learning approach, BINUS SCHOOL realizes that cultivating creativity is more than just an artistic pursuit; rather, it’s a way of thinking. Through the visual art project, our students learn to embrace experimentation, imagination, and artistic expression, reinforcing the school’s commitment to hands-on learning.
Growing Through Enjoyable Learning
The Primary Visual Art Class at BINUS SCHOOL Serpong provides students with a space to explore, create, and express their ideas freely. Through projects like this, they develop not only artistic techniques, but also critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are tactical for their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional ability. These are pivotal assets for their future later learning journey and outcome.
Visual arts remain an essential part of our educational approach for Primary students as BINUS SCHOOL Serpong commits to continuously champion hands-on learning. Our school adheres to this to inspire young learners to see the world through a creative lens and bring their valuable imagination to life.
